ABL charging posts for electric mobility

The eMC2 and eMC3 charging poles are installed at a wide variety of locations with different potential risks. A universal solution is therefore needed that offers reliable protection against lightning currents and surges. In this case ABL relies on the compact and space saving Type 1 combined arrester DEHNshield.

The challenge

Since 2015 ABL has been supplying charging pole eMC2 for application in public charging stations. The new eMC3 charging post fulfils the VDE-AR-N4101 standard that has applied to the public sector in Germany since 1 September 2016. The eMC3 achieves the prescribed protective class II for public charging posts and includes the required meter backup fuses and adapters for electronic household meters.

Uninterrupted functionality for charging processes is crucial. Particularly in an international context and the resulting worldwide distribution of installation locations, charging stations are significantly jeopardised by the effects of lightning discharges.

More than 1 million lightning events take place every year in Germany alone. The surges resulting from this exceed the dielectric strength of the installed electronic components inside the charging post many times over.

Also, grid-induced voltage peaks – due to switching operations or earth faults and short-circuits, for example – must also be taken into account as a threat.

The result is defective electronic components and a defective charging post. Surges arising during the charging process itself might even damage the electric vehicle. As this would entail severe economic consequences and in order to minimise maintenance and repair work, an effective and reliable lightning and overvoltage protection concept is required.

The solution

As the eMC2 and eMC3 charging posts are installed in a variety of locations with the most diverse potential risks, a universal solution is needed which provides permanent, reliable lightning and surge protection anywhere and everywhere.

In this case ABL relies on the compact and space saving Type 1 combined arrester DEHNshield. It is based on pure spark gap technology and thus ensures the wave breaker function. This reduces the energy of the lightning impulse current to such an extent that even the most sensitive electronic components within the charging post are not damaged.

This provides real terminal equipment protection for both the charging post and the vehicle!

It also already fulfils the requirements of the future IEC 60364-7-722. A revised version of this directive applies as of 2019, requiring all publicly accessible charging facilities to be equipped with overvoltage protection.
