SICHARGE D fast charging posts from Siemens
The SICHARGE D fast chargers are installed in a wide variety of locations with different potential risks. This calls for a universal solution that offers reliable lightning and surge protection everywhere and at all times. To protect the AC power supply system, Siemens AG therefore relies on the space-saving Type 1 + 2 DEHNvap EMOB combined arrester.

The challenge
Siemens AG has been supplying compact DC fast-charging stations for public charging with an output of up to 300 kW since 2021. The Sicharge D basic charging station can easily be extended by 2 DC charging points so that up to 5 vehicles can be charged dynamically in parallel.
In addition to powerful chargers for motorways and urban fast charging stations, the portfolio also includes chargers and software solutions for bus and logistics depots, as well as for companies and car park and fleet operators.
The SICHARGE D fast chargers have dynamic power distribution that takes into account the specific power requirements of an electric vehicle, ensures an optimised charging time and complies with the EN 61851-1/23, IEC 62196-3 (Mode 4, type 2) and IEC 61851-1, IEC 62196-2 (Mode 3, type 2) standards. The requirements of overvoltage category III for surge protection for public charging stations are also fulfilled.
Permanent availability is crucial for fast-charging stations. Trouble-free operation is threatened by lightning strikes and surges. In Germany alone, more than one million lightning events are recorded every year. The resulting surges far exceed the dielectric strength of the electronic components installed in the charging posts. Voltage peaks in the supply network, e.g. due to switching operations or earth faults and short circuits, also pose a realistic threat. They lead to the failure of electronic components, signal/communication lines and thus to damage to the charger.
Surges that occur during the charging process itself can even damage the electric vehicle. As this would have serious economic consequences, and in order to minimise maintenance and repair costs, an effective and reliable lightning and surge protection concept is required.
The solution
As SICHARGE D fast chargers are installed in a wide variety of locations with different risk potentials, a universal solution is required that offers reliable lightning and surge protection everywhere and at all times.
In this case, Siemens AG relies on the space-saving combined arrester, Type 1+2, DEHNvap EMOB to protect the AC power supply system. This is RAC spark gap technology with a so-called wave-breaker function, which reduces the lightning impulse current energy to such an extent that even the most sensitive electronic components in the charging station remain undamaged. Terminal equipment is preserved – both the charging station and the electric vehicle. Furthermore, the requirements of IEC 60364-7-722, IEC 60364-4-44 and IEC 60364-5-53 are complied with.
